Unlike traditional framed enclosures, frameless custom shower glass doors use thicker, heavier glass — typically 3/8” to 1/2” — to provide strength and stability without bulky metal framing. Because of the weight and precision involved, proper measuring and professional installation are critical.
Heavy-duty hinges allow the door to swing smoothly inward and outward, while specialized clips secure fixed panels to tile, stone, or adjoining glass. When it comes to custom shower glass enclosures, the quality of both the materials and the installation makes all the difference in durability, safety, and long-term performance.
Tile Tips: Prevent Water Leaks
Before installing custom shower glass doors, it’s important to make sure your tile work is properly prepared. While most tile is rarely perfectly plumb or level, that’s not unusual — and it’s something we account for. Every glass panel is custom-cut to accommodate minor variations in walls and surfaces so your enclosure fits precisely and looks clean and seamless.
That said, proper slope is critical. The shower curb and surrounding tile must slope inward toward the drain so water flows back into the shower. Without the correct pitch, water can pool or escape, which may require adding an unnecessary dam or corrective solution to prevent leaks.

All of our hinge options are designed to self-close when the door is within 15 degrees of the closed position, helping keep your shower properly sealed and watertight.

Standard-Duty Hinges- Rated up to 80 lbs. Ideal for smaller shower doors. We typically never use these for custom shower doors.

Heavy-Duty Hinges — Rated up to 110 lbs. Built with reinforced steel components to support heavier glass doors, these hinges are for average-sized 3/8" doors, which range around 28" x 80" tall.

Ultra Heavy-Duty Hinges — Rated up to 165 lbs. Designed for wider or taller doors, and highly recommended for heavier 1/2" glass shower doors.

How Is Tempered Glass Safer?
Every custom shower glass door we install is made from tempered safety glass to provide strength and peace of mind. Tempered glass is specially treated to be significantly stronger than standard glass, making it ideal for shower enclosures. It is almost five times stronger than standard annealed glass, especially with thicker 3/8" or 1/2" custom shower doors.
If broken, non-tempered glass shatters into large, sharp shards that can cause serious injury. Tempered glass, on the other hand, breaks into small, rounded pieces that are far less likely to cause deep cuts. That’s why building codes require tempered glass in shower installations.
